The launch today of the Jeffrey Cheah Foundation marks a major milestone in the history of private education in the state of Selangor and indeed in Malaysia.
As a Foundation that is dedicated to giving back to society through sustainable quality education and enriching the lives of bright and deserving students, it is a truly unique structure.
In fact, I understand that it is the first-of-its-kind to be launched by anyone in the private education sector in the country.
As chairman of the Sunway Group, Tan Sri Jeffrey Cheah, is a well-known entrepreneur and also a pioneer in the field of private education. I am told that the institutions in the Sunway Education Group, comprising chiefly Sunway University College, Monash University Sunway Campus, Jeffrey Cheah School of Medicine, and Sunway International School, have produced thousands of high-calibre graduates over the past 24 years. Many of them have gone on to serve Selangor and Malaysia well in various fields.
Tan Sri Jeffrey Cheah is also recognised for his philanthropy – numerous contributions to society – especially in the field of education, and his involvement in supporting various community service-related activities.
Therefore, I wish to congratulate him for taking yet another major step forward in extending his vision and legacy of giving to society through the launch of the Jeffrey Cheah Foundation.
It takes a magnanimous man like Tan Sri Jeffrey Cheah to donate all his shares previously held under the Sunway Education Trust Fund to the Foundation. In so doing, he has ensured that these shares are held there in perpetuity and will be used to further the cause of the Foundation in bringing good and quality education to future generations of diligent and deserving students.
I installed Tan Sri Jeffrey Cheah as Foundation Chancellor of Sunway University College in September 2006. Today I am pleased to see that Tan Sri Jeffrey Cheah has put the cause of education well ahead of the business of education.
